A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers introduced a resolution on Wednesday to prevent unauthorized military force against Venezuela. The measure invokes the War Powers Resolution, a law designed to check the president's power to commit troops without congressional approval.
The resolution declares that Congress has not authorized the use of military force in Venezuela. Its sponsors aim to force a debate and vote, asserting legislative control over war-making powers.
Lead sponsor Representative Jim McGovern criticized the administration's approach. "Donald Trump claimed he would put America first—instead he’s trying to drag us into an illegal war in Venezuela," McGovern stated.
The move reflects growing congressional concern over escalating rhetoric toward the Venezuelan government. The resolution does not carry the force of law but places political pressure on the administration.
The White House has not commented on the legislative action. The resolution will proceed through the House of Representatives for consideration.
