Latvia’s prime minister, Evika Siliņa, resigned on Thursday after her government fell apart over a disagreement about Ukrainian drones that strayed into the country from Russia. The resignation comes months before elections scheduled for October.
Siliņa’s decision to fire Defence Minister Andris Sprūds, a member of the left-leaning Progressives party, led the Progressives to withdraw their support from her coalition government. Without their backing, the centre-right coalition collapsed, forcing Siliņa to step down.
The disagreement centered on how to handle Ukrainian drones that entered Latvian airspace from Russia. The incident sparked tensions within the coalition, ultimately ending the government.
