NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has vowed the alliance is "ready to do what it takes" to protect Europe. His statement on Wednesday was a direct response to recent aggressive comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to analyst Peter Zalmayev, Putin's confidence stems from a perceived lack of consequences. Zalmayev is the Founder and Director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative.
He told FRANCE 24 that Putin has "something to back his confidence with." Zalmayev cited the absence of a strong international response to repeated violations of NATO airspace by Russian aircraft.
