Recent findings from two major physics experiments have delivered a significant challenge to the long-theorized existence of "sterile neutrinos."
Sterile neutrinos are a hypothetical particle. Scientists proposed them to explain anomalies in neutrino data and to potentially account for the universe's invisible dark matter. Unlike the three known types of neutrinos, sterile neutrinos would not interact with ordinary matter at all, except through gravity.
The new research, however, found no evidence of these particles. The experiments were designed specifically to detect the subtle signal that sterile neutrinos should produce. Their null results make the particle's existence less likely.
This does not fully rule out sterile neutrinos, but it complicates the theoretical picture. Physicists must now seek alternative explanations for the original data anomalies that first suggested the particles. The search for dark matter also continues on other paths.
