Taiwan’s government has proposed a significant increase in its military budget for 2025. The plan aims to strengthen the island’s defensive capabilities and accelerate the modernization of its armed forces.
The proposed defense budget is approximately 440 billion New Taiwan Dollars (about $13.5 billion USD). This represents a 7.7% increase from the previous year and marks the largest annual rise in over a decade.
Analysts describe Taiwan’s strategy as a "porcupine" doctrine. This approach focuses on making the island a difficult and costly target for any potential invasion, rather than trying to match a larger military force directly. Key investments will include more mobile and asymmetric weapons systems.
Officials stated the funding will prioritize several areas. These include enhancing air and missile defense networks, building a larger fleet of domestically made warships, and improving overall combat readiness.
The budget proposal now goes to the legislature for review and approval. This move occurs amid ongoing military pressure from China, which claims the self-governed island as its own territory.
