FRANCE 24 spoke to Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko at the Africa Forward summit in Nairobi, Kenya. Boko, a Harvard-educated human rights lawyer, was elected in October 2024. His victory ended the former ruling party’s six-decade hold on power.
“Over the years, the opposition gained a lot of momentum,” Boko said. “In 2024, it was clear that the message we were taking to the people was finding fertile ground.”
He told FRANCE 24 that Botswana’s democracy “has passed all the tests now.”
