China Urges U.S. to Honor Commitments Following New Taiwan Act

The act makes permanent several existing requirements for the U.S. State Department. It mandates regular reviews and reports on American government guidelines concerning relations with Taiwan. China considers Taiwan an inalienable part of its territory. The one-China principle is the foundational political understanding upon which China and the U.S. established diplomatic relations. Chinese officials stated that the new U.S. law severely violates these crucial agreements. They urged the U.S. government to cease any official exchanges or military contacts with Taiwan immediately.
