In a rare diplomatic event, Lebanese and Israeli officials held direct talks on Wednesday. The meeting, focused on maintaining a fragile ceasefire, occurred at a United Nations peacekeeping post in Naqura, Lebanon.
A U.S. special envoy, Morgan Ortagus, attended the session. The talks are part of a border monitoring system created in November 2024 to prevent clashes between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
The United States is separately urging Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah. Washington considers Hezbollah a terrorist organization.
Israel and Lebanon have no formal diplomatic relations. Both countries had previously insisted that only military officers should handle the ceasefire monitoring. The presence of a U.S. diplomat marks a shift in this arrangement.
