American political scholar Francis Fukuyama calls the election of former U.S. President Donald Trump the most significant letdown in decades. Fukuyama is famous for his 1992 book, "The End of History and The Last Man," which argued liberal democracy had become the world's dominant model after the Cold War.
In an interview with FRANCE 24, the Stanford University professor said Trump's presidency was both "the most surprising and the most disappointing thing" since that book's publication. He described Trump as a leader with clear "authoritarian instincts."
Fukuyama specifically criticized Trump's approach to the war in Ukraine. He accused the former president of attempting to "cut an extremely shameful deal with Russia" regarding the conflict.
