A court official stated that the judge overseeing a high-profile investigation was not informed that the Justice Department's subpoenas targeted members of Congress. The disclosure raises new questions about the department's transparency in the case.
The official said Judge James Boasberg did not know the subpoenas for phone records involved lawmakers. The Justice Department, under the Biden administration, obtained these subpoenas in 2021 as part of a leak investigation.
Senator Chuck Grassley called the situation "deeply troubling." The investigation, known as "Arctic Frost," sought the records of at least two Democratic lawmakers and their staff.
The court's statement confirms the judge lacked key information about who was under scrutiny. This has prompted concerns from legislators about the oversight of sensitive investigations involving Congress.
