French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day state visit. This is his fourth trip to China since taking office.
President Macron's agenda includes difficult talks on two major issues. He aims to address Europe's complex trade relationship with China and to urge Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help end the war in Ukraine.
After a red-carpet welcome from China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the two held brief discussions. Macron will later meet with President Xi for more detailed talks.
The French leader's itinerary also includes a visit to the southwestern city of Chengdu. His visit is being closely watched by European allies concerned about economic ties and the conflict in Ukraine.
