China's average life expectancy has risen to a new high of 79 years. This figure, announced for 2024, edges the country closer to the levels seen in developed nations.
The National Health Commission (NHC) confirmed the record on Monday. It surpasses the 2023 average of 78.6 years. NHC head Lei Haichao stated the country aims for average life expectancy to reach 80 years by 2030.
This goal is a key part of President Xi Jinping's "Healthy China" initiative. The rising longevity marks a public health success.
However, it also intensifies pressure from China's demographic crisis. The country must rapidly expand its elderly care resources and social support systems. Officials now face the dual task of maintaining health gains while managing the economic demands of an aging society.
