Hong Kong police have opened a formal investigation into renovation work at two public housing estates. The probe follows media allegations that safety certificates for protective scaffolding nets were falsified.
Security Secretary Chris Tang Ping-keung confirmed the investigation on Wednesday. It focuses on projects at Fung Wah Estate in Chai Wan and Fortress Hill Garden in Fortress Hill.
Media reports allege that safety certificates for the scaffolding mesh at both sites were fake. The reports state the construction netting came from the same supplier in Shandong province.
Scaffolding nets are critical for public safety during renovations. They catch falling debris and protect pedestrians below. Falsified certificates mean the materials may not meet required safety standards.
The police investigation will determine the validity of the certificates and any potential legal breaches.
