Insurance sector candidates are calling for reforms to help victims of Hong Kong's recent deadly fire. They want insurers to simplify the claims process and to consider fire safety records when setting policy terms.
Chan Pui-leung and Simon Lam Yat-tung made these appeals at a government forum on Wednesday. It was the first such meeting since last week’s blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, which killed at least 159 people.
The candidates are both running for a legislative council seat representing the insurance sector. They argued that the industry must better support residents affected by such disasters.
Their proposals include creating a streamlined, dedicated channel for fire-related claims. They also suggested that insurers could use building fire inspection results in their risk assessments and pricing.
