Hong Kong's insurance regulator has identified 8,700 insurance policies held by residents of the building where last week's deadly fire occurred. The blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po killed 159 people and injured 79.
Approximately 30 insurance companies, including major firms AIA and Manulife, issued the policies. The Insurance Authority reports these include 7,600 life insurance and 1,100 property insurance contracts.
The regulator formed a special task force to locate affected policyholders. Insurance Authority CEO Clement Cheung Wan-ching said senior executives are leading the effort to contact all relevant insurers.
The task force will now work to ensure victims and their families receive urgent support and claims processing. The move aims to provide financial assistance during the recovery from the tragedy.
