A Filipino domestic helper rescued a three-month-old baby from a fire in Tai Po just one day after starting her new job in Hong Kong. Rhodora Alcaraz, 27, is now in intensive care with serious injuries.
Alcaraz arrived in Hong Kong last Tuesday and went directly to her employer's apartment. The fire broke out on her second day of work.
She escaped the burning flat with the infant in her arms. The blaze caused significant injuries to her throat, leaving her able to speak only in a whisper.
Medical staff describe her escape as miraculous. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
