A Chinese startup founded by a former Apple engineer has unveiled a new chip designed to power mixed reality (MR) headsets and AI glasses. The move positions the company as a potential rival to Apple's Vision Pro headset.
The company, GravityXR, was founded by Wang Chaohao. He is a Stanford University graduate and previously worked in Apple's extended reality (XR) unit. Last week, the startup showcased what it calls China's first all-in-one MR chip, named the Jizhi G-X100.
The chip uses an advanced 5-nanometre manufacturing process. This node is a measure of how small the chip's transistors are, which can affect performance and efficiency. GravityXR claims its new line of chips surpasses Apple's in certain technical metrics.
The product has already attracted significant industry attention. It highlights growing competition in the development of specialized hardware for XR and artificial intelligence wearable devices.
