A man accused of killing one National Guard member and critically injuring another in Washington, D.C., has pleaded not guilty. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, made his first court appearance remotely from a hospital bed on Tuesday.
A judge ordered Lakanwal held without bond. The judge cited the "sheer terror" of the downtown ambush, which occurred just blocks from the White House last week.
Prosecutors charged Lakanwal with murder and other offenses. He formally entered a plea of not guilty to all charges during the brief hearing.
The attack resulted in the death of one service member. A second guardsman remains in critical condition from the shooting.
