The United States has suspended all immigration applications from citizens of 19 countries, significantly expanding existing travel restrictions. The Trump administration announced the policy pause on Tuesday, citing national security and public safety concerns.
The order freezes processing for U.S. green cards and citizenship petitions from these nations. It effectively broadens a partial travel ban imposed on the same countries in June.
The move further restricts immigration, a central policy goal of President Donald Trump. The affected countries include Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, North Korea, and Venezuela. Several other nations, such as Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania, are also on the list.
Officials stated the pause will allow for a review of information-sharing protocols. They aim to ensure other governments adequately verify their citizens' identities and potential security risks.
