Teenager Executes Family's Killer in Public Taliban-Style Justice

A 13-year-old boy carried out a public execution in Afghanistan on Tuesday. He shot a man convicted of murdering 13 members of the boy's own family. The execution occurred in a sports stadium in the eastern city of Khost. An estimated 80,000 people attended, including victims' relatives, and cheered as the sentence was carried out. Afghanistan's Supreme Court had found the man guilty of killing nine children, their mother, and three other relatives. The public execution method strongly echoes practices from the Taliban's previous rule in the 1990s. The Taliban, who regained power in 2021, have reinstated their strict interpretation of Islamic law. Public executions and corporal punishments have since resumed.
