Ana García de Hernández, the wife of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, has publicly thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for granting her husband a pardon.
In a statement, she expressed gratitude to Trump for "recognizing a truth we always knew." Her husband was convicted in a U.S. federal court earlier this year on drug trafficking and weapons charges.
The pardon, issued during Trump's final day in office in January 2021, commuted Hernández's life sentence. The U.S. Department of Justice had described the former Honduran leader as a key partner in a violent drug conspiracy.
Juan Orlando Hernández maintains his innocence. He is currently serving a reduced 45-year sentence following a separate, later trial and conviction that was unaffected by the pardon.
