President Lee Jae Myung announced a new national commemoration for December 3, calling it a day for “people’s sovereignty.” The date marks the one-year anniversary of a failed attempt to impose martial law.
Last year on this date, authorities thwarted a plot by military officials to declare a national emergency. The plan, which did not receive required presidential approval, sought to suspend civil rights and deploy troops nationwide.
President Lee stated the new annual observance will honor democratic principles. It aims to remember the citizens’ role in protecting constitutional order.
The government will finalize the designation through a cabinet meeting. No details on specific ceremonies or public holidays were immediately provided.
