Suspect in Fatal Shooting of Police Dog Was Undocumented Immigrant, ICE Says

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed that a man killed in a shootout with California police was a Salvadoran national residing in the country illegally. The suspect also shot and killed a police dog during the incident.
The confrontation occurred after officers attempted to apprehend the man, who was a known gang member. The suspect opened fire, killing a police K-9 named Spike.
Officers returned fire, killing the suspect. No other injuries were reported.
ICE has placed an immigration detainer on the suspect. This is a formal request to law enforcement to hold an individual for transfer into federal custody for potential deportation proceedings.
