San Francisco has launched a groundbreaking lawsuit against 11 major food and beverage companies. City Attorney David Chiu announced the legal action on Tuesday, marking the first time a U.S. government body has sued manufacturers of so-called "ultra-processed" foods.
The lawsuit targets corporations including Nestlé, PepsiCo, and Coca-Cola. It accuses them of misleading the public about the health risks of their products and contributing to a diabetes and heart disease crisis.
Ultra-processed foods contain ingredients not typically used in home cooking, such as artificial flavors and preservatives. The city argues that the companies knowingly sold addictive, harmful products while marketing them as healthy choices.
San Francisco seeks financial damages to recover public health costs. The funds would cover medical treatment and education programs related to chronic diseases linked to excessive consumption of these foods.
The case represents a significant new legal front in public health, similar to past lawsuits against tobacco and opioid companies. The food companies have not yet issued formal responses to the allegations.
