The University of Miami’s athletic director has called for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to re-examine its system for deciding which teams play in its championship game. This request follows a season where the Miami Hurricanes won 10 games but did not qualify for the conference title match.
The team missed the championship because of the ACC’s multi-step tiebreaker rules. These rules, used when teams have identical conference records, decided the title game participants against Miami.
The outcome carries significant consequences. Missing the conference championship further reduces a team’s chance to be selected for the College Football Playoff, the national postseason tournament.
Miami’s athletic director described the current tiebreaker system as overly complex. He argues the process should be simplified to ensure the best teams compete for the conference title.
