Google’s YouTube and Snap have reached settlements in the first lawsuit of its kind accusing social media platforms of fueling a mental health crisis in schools. The case, brought by a rural Kentucky school district, claimed that platform addiction disrupted learning and forced public schools to spend heavily on mental health services. The settlements, confirmed in court filings, come ahead of a scheduled trial on June 12 in federal court in Oakland, California. TikTok and Meta Platforms remain defendants in the lawsuit, which will proceed as a test case for similar claims.
