Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández has left prison after receiving a pardon from former U.S. President Donald Trump. U.S. officials confirmed his release on Tuesday.
A New York court sentenced Hernández last year to 45 years in prison. Judges found him guilty of helping traffickers move hundreds of tons of cocaine into the United States while he was in office.
The pardon from Trump, issued during his final day as president in 2021, led directly to Hernández's release. The legal process to enact the pardon concluded this week.
Hernández served as president of Honduras from 2014 to 2022. His trial revealed he had used his political power to protect a major drug trafficking network.
