Nigeria's State Security Service (SSS) has brought cybercrime charges against activist Omoyele Sowore and the parent companies of Facebook and X. The SSS presented the case at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday.
Authorities accuse Sowore of cyberbullying President Bola Tinubu. The charge alleges that Sowore, a human rights activist and publisher of the Sahara Reporters news site, called the president a criminal in online posts.
The SSS also named Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook) and X Corp. as defendants in the case. The charge links them to the alleged violation by hosting the content.
The case continues under Nigeria's cybercrime laws. These laws prohibit online harassment and the transmission of offensive messages.
