Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pardoned Juan Orlando Hernández, the ex-president of Honduras. Hernández was serving a 45-year prison sentence in the United States for drug trafficking.
Trump called the conviction a "Biden administration set-up." He issued the controversial pardon using his executive clemency powers.
The move comes as the current U.S. administration is increasing pressure on Venezuela. U.S. officials have recently threatened action against Venezuela for its alleged role in international drug trafficking.
Hernández, who led Honduras from 2014 to 2022, was found guilty by a New York jury in March. The court convicted him of accepting millions of dollars in bribes to protect cocaine shipments bound for the United States.
