Guinean presidential candidate Fernando Dias has received asylum from Nigeria. Nigeria's Foreign Minister confirmed the protection in a formal letter on Sunday.
The minister sent the letter to ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States. In it, Nigeria also asked ECOWAS to approve a security mission.
The request seeks authorization for ECOWAS forces already in Guinea-Bissau's capital, Bissau. Their task would be to secure the Nigerian embassy premises where Dias is staying.
