South African authorities have charged a well-known radio presenter with attempting to recruit citizens to fight for Russia in Ukraine. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced the charges on Thursday.
The suspect, who hosts a current affairs show on a major station, was arrested in Cape Town. Prosecutors allege he used his media platform to identify and recruit South African nationals for the Russian military. He is also accused of facilitating travel for potential fighters.
The NPA stated the man faces charges under South Africa’s Foreign Military Assistance Act. This law prohibits citizens from participating in foreign armed conflicts without state permission. The charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
South Africa maintains a neutral stance on the Ukraine war. The government has faced international pressure over its diplomatic ties with Russia. This case represents the first known criminal charge in the country related to alleged recruitment for the conflict.
The radio station has suspended the presenter pending the investigation. A court will hear the case for a bail application soon.
