Ovidio Guzmán López, a son of imprisoned Mexican drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, has pleaded guilty to U.S. drug trafficking charges. The plea agreement ensures he will not face the death penalty.
Prosecutors made a formal promise not to seek capital punishment in May 2023. This pledge was a key condition for Guzmán López's extradition from Mexico to the United States earlier this year.
Guzmán López, known as "the Mouse," is a senior figure in the Sinaloa Cartel. He admitted guilt to charges involving the large-scale distribution of cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana for importation into the U.S.
His father, "El Chapo," is serving a life sentence in a U.S. prison. The guilty plea likely results from negotiations between U.S. prosecutors and the defendant's legal team, a common practice in complex cases.
