Japan Considers Missile Export to Philippines, Drawing Beijing's Ire
Japan is considering exporting a surface-to-air missile system to the Philippines, according to Japanese media. This move is part of Japan's broader effort to relax its strict weapons export rules. The system under discussion is the Type 03 Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile. Japan already plans to deploy this same missile type on Yonaguni Island, which is located just 110 kilometers from Taiwan. China has previously condemned the Yonaguni deployment as "extremely dangerous." The potential sale to the Philippines is therefore likely to draw strong criticism from Beijing, which views such military cooperation with suspicion. Kyodo News reported the potential export on Sunday. The report did not specify a timeline for a final decision.
