U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed the deportation of a woman who illegally entered the country and was later convicted of attempting to murder her newborn child on Long Island.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed by authorities, served eight years in a New York state prison for the attempted killing. Upon completing her sentence, she was transferred to ICE custody and subsequently removed from the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the deportation was carried out in accordance with federal immigration law. The case has drawn attention to the cooperation—or lack thereof—between state and federal authorities regarding the detention and transfer of convicted immigrants after their release from state prison.
