The Chairperson of the African Union Commission commended Algeria for its influential role in African diplomacy and its principled work on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Mahmoud Ali Youssouf made the remarks while delivering the keynote address at the opening of a high-level peace and security seminar in Algiers. The event is part of the ongoing "Oran Process." Youssouf specifically highlighted Algeria's leadership during its recent term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. The council is the UN's most powerful body, responsible for international peace and security. In his speech, the Chairperson also thanked two outgoing African UNSC members, Algeria and Sierra Leone, for their service. He simultaneously welcomed the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Liberia as they begin their terms on the council. Youssouf described this transition as a pivotal moment for Africa's engagement in multilateral diplomacy.
