A U.S. Navy veteran has filed an appeal after a judge dismissed his defamation lawsuit against the Associated Press (AP). The veteran, Zachary Young, accuses the judge of showing bias in the ruling.
Young previously won a separate defamation case against CNN. In dismissing his case against the AP, the judge called it a "bad sequel" to the earlier lawsuit.
In his new appeal filing, Young argues that this comparison demonstrates prejudice. He claims it improperly minimized his current legal arguments.
The case stems from AP's reporting on Young's past. The core legal question is whether the news organization published false and damaging statements about him.
The appeals court must now decide if the trial judge's comments warranted dismissal. A ruling could set a precedent on judicial conduct in similar media defamation suits.
