BYD Launches Low-Cost Hybrid SUV in Japanese Market

Chinese automaker BYD has introduced a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Japan. The new SUV, named the SEALION 6, directly challenges rivals like Toyota with a significantly lower price. The vehicle starts at 5.28 million yen (approximately $33,700). This undercuts popular Japanese hybrids, including Toyota's best-selling RAV4. BYD emphasizes the car's electric range of 120 kilometers on a single charge for daily commutes. This launch is a key part of BYD's strategy to grow in Japan. The company entered the market in 2022, initially selling only battery-electric vehicles. The new PHEV model aims to attract drivers who remain hesitant about fully electric cars. Industry analysts note the move increases pressure on Japanese manufacturers. BYD's competitive pricing and integrated battery production could disrupt the domestic market. The company plans to expand its Japanese dealership network to over 100 locations by 2025.
