Hong Kong's Hub Status Threatened by Middle East War
A major Middle East conflict is putting pressure on Hong Kong's position as a key Asian flight hub. Aviation experts warn that rising fuel prices, caused by the war, are forcing airlines to cut passenger flights. This could temporarily reduce the city's importance as a global transit point. The impact depends on how long the conflict lasts. Longer tensions mean continued high fuel costs and more flight reductions. Hong Kong also faces intense regional competition. Steven Cheung King-lung, chairman of the Hong Kong Professional Airline Pilots Association, stated the city must compete with rivals like Singapore, airports in the Greater Bay Area, Japan, and South Korea. "While Hong Kong is no more susceptible to the fuel price increases than other hubs, the competition for passengers is now very fierce," Cheung said. The combined pressure of higher costs and strong rivals challenges the city's aviation recovery.
