India will begin talks to buy advanced Russian fighter jets and a missile defense system during President Vladimir Putin's visit this week. This move comes as the United States government pushes to limit such deals between the two nations.
According to sources familiar with the matter, India will discuss purchasing Su-57 fighter jets and an upgraded S-500 missile defense shield. The talks will occur under the two countries' "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership."
The planned discussions highlight India's independent foreign policy. It is strengthening military ties with Russia despite pressure from the United States.
