A bitter feud between two of Silicon Valley’s biggest names goes to trial Monday in California. Elon Musk has sued Sam Altman, accusing him of betraying the founding agreement of OpenAI. The lawsuit claims Altman turned the non-profit artificial intelligence company into a for-profit enterprise.
Musk’s complaint names Altman, OpenAI, its president Greg Brockman, and Microsoft as defendants. He accuses them of breach of contract and unjust enrichment. OpenAI has responded by saying Musk is “motivated by jealousy.”
Jury selection begins Monday morning at a federal courthouse in Oakland. Opening arguments are expected later this week. The trial is scheduled to last two to three weeks.
The courtroom is set to feature a who’s who of tech leaders. Musk, Altman, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella are all expected to testify. Internal communications from Musk and key OpenAI executives will also be presented as evidence.
