Elon Musk is taking Sam Altman to court. The legal battle between two giants of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector began this week. Musk accuses Altman of abandoning OpenAI’s original, nonprofit mission.
Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit organization. Its goal was to develop AI safely for the benefit of humanity. Musk left the company in 2018. Since then, OpenAI has shifted to a for-profit model, accepting billions in investment from Microsoft.
Musk now argues this change betrays the founding promise. He claims Altman and the board prioritized profit over safety. The trial will examine whether OpenAI broke its original agreement.
