DAMASCUS – A Syrian court has opened the first hearing in the trial of former President Bashar al-Assad, who fled the country alongside his brother. Both men will be tried in absentia.
“Today we begin the first trials of transitional justice in Syria,” the presiding judge announced as the session began.
The case marks a key step in the country’s post-conflict judicial process. Assad and his brother remain at large, with their current whereabouts unconfirmed.
