Syria Opens First Trial of Assad-Era Officials

DAMASCUS — A Syrian court has begun the first trial of officials from the government of former President Bashar Assad. One official is appearing in person, while several others are being tried in absentia. Assad and his brother are among the defendants. Both are believed to have fled to Russia.
