Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally requested a presidential pardon. He seeks to overturn his recent convictions on corruption charges.
The office of President Isaac Herzog confirmed the request. Officials will first refer the application to the Justice Ministry for review. Only after this step will President Herzog make his final decision.
Netanyahu received a guilty verdict in his corruption trial earlier this year. A presidential pardon represents his last potential avenue to clear his name. The process is now underway, but a resolution is not expected immediately.
