The United States is facing an unusual backlash from the global mathematics community.
More than 2,300 mathematicians from at least 76 countries have signed an online petition. They want to move the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) out of the US.
The ICM is the world’s most important mathematics conference. It is also where the prestigious Fields Medal is awarded. This year’s event is scheduled for July in Philadelphia.
The petition urges organizers to “move the 2026 ICM out of the US.” Signatories also pledge “not to participate in the ICM” if it stays in the country.
It remains unclear whether mathematicians from China will join this boycott. Their decision could significantly impact the conference’s credibility and attendance.
