A recent agreement between the European Union and Mauritania to limit migration is showing initial results. The number of migrants arriving in Spain's Canary Islands from the West African nation has dropped significantly.
By the end of September, nearly 13,000 migrants from Mauritania had reached the islands. This figure represents more than half of the total arrivals for all of 2024. The data suggests the cooperative effort to curb irregular migration is having an effect.
The EU and Mauritania finalized their partnership earlier this year. The deal focuses on border management and providing economic support to address the root causes of migration.
