Asha Bhosle, one of India's most famous singers, has died at age 92. Her career lasted more than 80 years. She recorded an estimated 12,000 songs.
Bhosle first became famous as a "playback singer." This means she recorded songs for Bollywood movies that actors would then lip-sync on screen. Her voice became more celebrated than the actors themselves.
She sang in many styles, from traditional ghazals to dance tunes and pop music. While she was already a star in Asia, she became known to Western audiences in 1997. The British band Cornershop released a tribute song named "Brimful of Asha."
She later worked with many international artists, including Boy George and the virtual band Gorillaz. Her voice reached audiences around the world.
