The city of Hat Yai in southern Thailand is accustomed to seasonal floods. However, residents recently faced a disaster of an entirely new scale.
A catastrophic flood event, described by experts as a one-in-300-year occurrence, overwhelmed the city. Longtime resident Krongkarn Jantarasavad reported that the severity of the flooding was inconceivable compared to normal seasonal patterns. The floodwaters far exceeded the levels that the city's infrastructure was built to handle.
