Romuald Wadagni, Benin's finance minister, has won the country's presidential election by a huge margin. Provisional results show he secured approximately 94% of the vote.
Wadagni was the clear favorite entering the election. He has served as finance minister since 2016 and is credited with strong economic management.
The election was marked by a very low voter turnout. Observers noted that many opposition figures were barred from running.
Wadagni will now succeed President Patrice Talon, who supported his campaign. Talon was constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.
