A major Democratic candidate has suddenly left the race to be California's next governor. This has increased worries within the party.
Congressman Eric Swalwell ended his campaign this week. His exit comes as state Democrats already faced two big problems. Recent polls show their candidates are not well known by voters. Other polls also suggest the race could be competitive for Republicans.
Party officials are now working quickly to find a strong candidate. They want someone who can raise enough money and gain statewide recognition. The election will be in 2026 to replace Governor Gavin Newsom, who cannot run again due to term limits.
Several other Democrats remain in the race. The most prominent is Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis. The Republican side includes former baseball star Steve Garvey.
